Relays are originally used as electronic or electromechanical switching devices, typically operated by a low voltage that controls a higher-voltage circuit and turns it on or off. In Dark Light Dark, a sequencer consisting 8 relays and a programmable electronic board, placed on a frame drum hanged on the wall, plays a repetitive rhythm by gently ticking on the skin of the drum.

Such LED panels are commonly used in front of small scale shops in Istanbul,  as announcement signs for prices, products or similar information.

In Dark Light Dark, a LED panel shows a moving image made up of 8 lines. Each line corresponds to the movement of a single relay ticking on the frame drum.
